Municipal websites can often overwhelm users with too much information, making it hard for residents to find what they need.

Whether it’s highlighting important announcements or making municipal forms easy to find, our designs reflect the unique essence of each city, like Glen Cove, NY, where a recent redesign made navigating local government services simpler than ever.
New City Website Design: Factors to Consider
Designing a municipal website is about more than just aesthetics—it’s about understanding the city and its residents. At Town Web, we help city clerks ask the right questions to ensure their website is informative, engaging, and inclusive:
- City’s vision: Whether the goal is to improve engagement, streamline communication, or boost SEO, a clear design objective is key to creating a website that reflects the city’s character.
- Delivering relevant information: City websites are information hubs, providing access to everything from calendars to forms and alerts. Empowering residents to personalize their experience with notifications creates lasting engagement.
- Device support: With responsive design, our websites function flawlessly on any device, from desktops to smartphones, ensuring seamless access wherever residents are.
- Accessibility: By adhering to ADA and Section 508 standards, we ensure that every resident, regardless of ability, can access vital information with ease, protecting the city from legal complexities.
- Diversity: With multilingual support, we make sure language isn’t a barrier. Every community member, no matter their background, can find the information they need quickly and easily.
By focusing on these elements, Town Web helps city clerks create websites that truly serve their communities, transforming them into dynamic, inclusive, and secure digital hubs.
Best City Websites
Turning a run-of-the-mill municipal website into a digital masterpiece requires organization, intuitive design, and experience. Having designed and built our fair share of websites since 2007, we’ve learned a thing or two about what works and what doesn’t.
When people depend on your website to get things done, it’s crucial that you make it easier for them. In this situation, bad design can have real world implications.
Your users may find themselves lost in a labyrinth of data, struggling to locate important information when they need it the most. This may include trash collection notices, meeting minutes, or new regulations.
That’s why we take a function-first approach to municipal web design. You could have the best looking government website on the internet, but if it lacks basic functionality, it’s no good.
City of Los Angeles
The website of the City of Los Angeles is clean and uncluttered, despite the animated elements on the homepage.
It greets you with a video that cycles through LA’s captivating landscape, as well as news highlights from LA This Week, which you can easily disable by toggling “pause animations” under accessibility tools.
The same menu lets you format all the typography, including line height, kerning, size, and alignment. You can also hide images, highlight links, and change the contrast settings to accommodate users with visual disabilities.
Google Translate, the accessibility widget, a search menu, and a virtual assistant called CHIP are seamlessly integrated on the header.
UI elements are visually light with no unnecessary frills. Easily readable text and a well-curated list of quick-access services makes the homepage even more clutter-free.
The site also features a range of other services, such as submitting service requests for trash pickup and graffiti removal. It lets you access city directories, neighborhood information, and upcoming event details with ease.
The presence of interactive tools like maps and service locators enhances interactivity and ensures that essential information is always readily available.
City of Louisville
Right off the bat, it becomes abundantly clear that this website prioritizes navigability, considering how the first half of its homepage is essentially a navigation tool.
Unlike other sites that offer only a handful of quick service buttons that redirect you to a different page, here they open up expandable menus with scrollable side bars containing links to every functionality that the site offers, as well as an independent search function. They’ve done this in the most uncluttered way possible.
Then there’s the drop-down menu on the header, which is among the neatest we’ve seen on a local government website. It wastes no time with superfluous animations, mouseover events are instant, and selected elements in the menu get underlined in yellow, which directs your eye as you scan the list items, without visual confusion.
Even the text on the tinted hero image has an inconspicuous drop shadow, making it easily legible despite the visually busy imagery in the background; an arguably insignificant detail that the designers could’ve easily done without, but chose not to.
All the media on the site are thoughtfully curated and accurately depict the context they’re used in. There’s even an embedded accessibility widget that features some of the most comprehensive presets, profiles, and toggles that will let you alter the content’s visibility and accessibility.
Fun fact: this website is a well-deserving winner of the Digital Cities Survey of 2023.
Kansas City
Kansas City's official website serves as an outstanding model for maintaining consistent brand identity elements throughout the site. For instance, they’ve stylized some of the hero images in a way that’s consistent with their logo colors and overall design language.
The same is true for icons and other vector graphics used across the site. Additionally, the hero image banner doubles up as a carousel which you can pause, although there’s no accessibility tools widget. Instead, there’s one that enables quick access to KCMO311.
Below the hero carousel you’ll find the date, which is a nice touch, followed by large bold service icons in brand colors.
There’s also an address-specific resource look-up page and finally separate accordion menus for city council and executive staff, so people’s faces aren’t the first thing you see when the page loads.
The drop-down menu contains a nifty “I want” section, which provides easy access to some of the site’s core functionalities.
City of Austin
The official website of Austin, Texas, features a clean UI characterized by a well-structured design devoid of clutter and animated elements. The header categorizes information into easily accessible sections, such as “residents,” “business,” “government,” and “visitors”.
This clear segmentation helps users quickly find the information they need without overwhelming them with too many options. The site features plenty of white space, modern typography, and a consistent color scheme, which, when combined, helps to enhance the readability and comfort.
They’ve displayed key information and frequently accessed services prominently on the homepage through clearly labeled buttons and links, ensuring users can navigate to important parts of the site such as recycling schedules, city news, and service requests with ease.
Additionally, the site adapts seamlessly to different devices and screen sizes, ensuring the navigation remains intuitive.
City of Lake Ozark, Missouri
Lake Ozark, Missouri, embraced bold changes in its web design to match the energy and vibrancy of its community. With an outdated site that didn’t reflect the city's dynamic character, the need for a fresh approach became clear, so Lake Ozark, MO sought our expertise.
The redesign kicked off by addressing ADA/508 compliance, ensuring that the website would be accessible to all users while laying the foundation for a more modern look.
The new design features a lively color palette and an open, inviting text layout that feels uncluttered and approachable. Community photos now take center stage, showcasing Lake Ozark’s natural beauty and local pride.
The result is a platform that feels alive and engaging, much like the city it represents. It’s more than just a website—it’s a digital reflection of the city's spirit, inviting residents and visitors to connect in meaningful ways.
West Bountiful City, Utah
West Bountiful City’s website perfectly captures the essence of small-town charm while providing residents with modern, intuitive features. The design is clean and straightforward, with a calming color palette that reflects the city’s serene atmosphere.
At the top, you'll find an easy-to-use navigation bar, along with a prominent search tool that helps users find what they need with minimal effort.
The homepage features quick links to essential services like utility payments, permits, and public meetings, ensuring residents can access vital information quickly.
