How to Post Videos to Your Town Website
Having videos on your town website is a great way to get information to your residents.
A lot of people prefer to watch videos rather than read text. Videos can also help to improve your website’s SEO, drawing in more visitors and keeping them on your page for longer. In some cases, videos are an easier way to share information with visitors. Other times, you’ll come across interesting videos online that you’ll want to share with your town’s residents.
No matter what your reasons, it’s a good idea to know how to post a video on your website or blog.
Just a few years ago, posting videos required a certain amount of skill and savvy. Embedding a video used to be a challenge. There were a number of different formats, and often visitors wouldn’t have the right software installed to watch the video. Then there was the fact that most people were still on dial-up –which made embedding videos, and watching them, a challenge.
The good news though, is that today, it’s easier than ever to embed videos on your website or blog. Most people have high-speed internet today and the software to watch videos, and embedding the videos is a much more user-friendly process. In most cases, it’s usually just a matter of finding a host, or uploading the video, and then copying and pasting.
To help get you started, here is a brief overview on how you can post videos to your website.
Find a Host
While you can host videos yourself, if you own your domain –or upload them directly to WordPress, in most cases, you’ll want to avoid hosting your own videos. Hosting your own videos has a number of issues associated with it: namely, server bandwidth issues that could limit the amount of traffic that your video can receive, as well as issues with the video’s format not being compatible with some people’s browsers. Then there’s the problem of slow, lagging videos due to the video being hosted on a shared and overloaded server.
YouTube is by far the most popular option: it’s free –and easy to use. It’s also able to accommodate a lot of traffic without slowing down or lagging, and won’t eat into your bandwidth. YouTube will optimize the video into all required resolutions and sizes so visitors will be able to view them without any issues.
To host a video on YouTube, all you need is to do set up a YouTube account. Then, simply upload your video. Once your video has been uploaded, all that’s left is to embed it on your website or blog.
Embed the Video
Embedding a video is fairly simple and straightforward process. You can embed your own videos, or other videos that you find on YouTube. Here’s how you can embed a video on both your website or blog.
- On Your Website
If you want to upload the video to your website, you’ll want to embed the video into the website code. This is a matter of copying and pasting, so it’s not hard to do. Head over to your website and add a new entry, or edit an existing one.
Then, go the YouTube that you’d like to share, and navigate to the “share” button found below the video.
Next, click the click on the “embed” option and copy the code.
Then paste the code into the source code of your web page. No need to learn complicated codes and no losing sleep over it at night!
- On Your Blog
If you are updating your blog and looking to embed a video there, it’s simple. If you use a standard site such as WordPress –all you have to do is to navigate to the media upload section and paste the URL of your YouTube into it. WordPress will work the code out for you.
If you aren’t happy with the appearance of your video –YouTube has made it possible for you to make basic edits. Once your video is uploaded, simply hit the ‘edit’ button and you’ll be able to add in music and titles, or add or remove sections.
Once your video has been successfully embedded be sure to give it a quick preview to ensure that everything went down just as you had hoped. Give it a quick play through as well just to make everything’s working.
Help Visitors to Share It
Another bonus when using a distributor like YouTube is that it’ll include links with the video to make it easier for your visitors to share it on social media. This can help your video to reach an even wider audience.
